With the Schunnemunk Mountains looming in the background and the Woodbury Creek darting through its center, it may be easy to pass off Woodbury as a nature-lover’s dream. But there is much more to the town, Woodbury is a bustling community with a myriad of options both culturally, scenically and commercially.
Known as the “Gateway to Orange County,” Woodbury is located in the southern portion of Orange County, at the intersection of Route 6, Route 17, and Exit 16 (Harriman) of the New York State Thruway. Woodbury borders Stony Point in Rockland County and property belonging to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The populated portion of West Point is approximately 15 miles east of Woodbury. Bear Mountain State Park is about an equal distance away. Woodbury is approximately 45 miles north of New York City. Many Woodbury residents make the daily commute to New York City. The largest employer and tourist attraction in the town is the Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Center located at Exit 16 of the New York State Thruway. Shoppers from throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond shop the approximate 220 upscale stores including Sachs, Liz Claiborne, Tommy Hilfiger and Bass.
Woodbury is comprised of the hamlets of Central Valley and Highland Mills. The area was formerly known as Woodbury Falls, officially created on December 19, 1889 by an act of the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
