Located in one of the fastest growing counties in the state, the Town of Cornwall is situated in the valley formed by Schunemunk Mountain and the Hudson Highland ridges along the Hudson River, offering unmatched river views. The town encompasses the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson and the historic hamlets of Bethlehem, Mountainville, Salisbury Mills, Canterbury and Idlewild.
Just 50 miles north of New York City, Cornwall is conveniently located and easily accessible, with Rt. 9W and the New York State Thruway passing through.
In 1684 the first permanent settlement was made in Cornwall. During the next 50 years, English and Scotch families came to the land and named it “new Cornwall” because of the similarity to the terrain of Cornwallshire, England. The first recorded town meeting took place in 1765, and the town’s name was changed to Cornwall in 1799.
During the late 1800s, Cornwall became a summer resort because of the beautiful Hudson River views, mountain vistas, scenic trails and convenience to New York City via riverboat or railroad. Today, visitors continue to come to Cornwall for many of its attractions including Hudson Highlands, Storm King State Park, Black Rock Forest, Main Street and its fine dining restaurants.
The Town of Cornwall has a solid tax base with superior services and an excellent school district with three elementary schools, a middle school and high school.
